Police intensifies crackdown on illegal Mining - Vereeniging

July 9th, 2023 Vereeniging is a city located in the south of Gauteng province, Between the month of June and July, over 50 Illegal miners have died though accidents and abandoned mines. 
The illegal miners also knows as "Zamazama" have taken over most of the abandoned mines, where they setup their own operations. Their gold refining centers are setup illegally in densely informal settlements. This has result in always high causualities in case of accidents.
In recent events, a gas cylinder of nitric oxide used to refine gold by the zamazam exploded leading to the death of more than 17 people and also injuring many others in this accident.
Another accident happened, Vereeniging where an explosions occurred in a mine, There were over 38 illegal miners and the police has no way of getting them or their bodies out since they were buried over a kilometer deep.
Police has therefore taken the operation to close all those mines as priority.
